Bronchiectasis is a chronic and progressive lung disease characterized by permanent airway dilation, recurrent infections, and progressive lung damage. Despite its significant burden, bronchiectasis remains underdiagnosed and mismanaged, leading to frequent exacerbations, hospitalizations, and declining lung function. This educational session will provide clinicians with a comprehensive understanding of bronchiectasis, focusing on early identification, disease progression, and evolving treatment strategies. Participants will first explore the clinical presentation and diagnostic criteria to enhance recognition and reduce misdiagnosis (LO1). The session will then examine the impact of pulmonary exacerbations on bronchial remodeling and disease progression, emphasizing the need for timely intervention to prevent further lung damage (LO2). Finally, faculty will review the current treatment landscape, highlighting standard management approaches and the critical unmet need for targeted therapies (LO3). With no approved therapies specifically for bronchiectasis, this session will equip healthcare providers with essential knowledge to optimize patient care while anticipating advancements in treatment.
The planners for this session are:
Asha Anandaiah, MD, Harvard Medical School
Mark L. Metersky, MD, University of Connecticut School of Medicine
B. Shoshana Zha, MD, PhD, University of California-San Francisco
This program was produced in collaboration with Insmed Incorporated.
Objectives
recognize the clinical presentation and diagnostic criteria for bronchiectasis to improve identification and reduce misdiagnosis
assess the impact of pulmonary exacerbations on bronchial remodeling and disease progression in bronchiectasis
evaluate the current treatment landscape for bronchiectasis, including existing management strategies and unmet therapeutic needs
